Gilbert Gaul at Fall Creek Falls
A commercial and popular success
during the late 1800's, Gilbert Gaul
lived in Van Buren county (in what
is now Fall Creek Falls).  Gaul was a
noted painter featuring realistic
Civil War, western, and Native
American scenes.  He was featured
quite prolifically in Harper's
Magazine and Century magazine,
and built an impressive following.
Gaul became the youngest member,
at age 27, of the National Academy
of Design in 1882.

Gaul inherited 5,000 acres from his
uncle in 1881, and built a cabin and
studio in Van Buren county,
Tennessee.  His property was
located within the present boundry
of Fall Creek Falls just south of
Youth Camp 2.  Gaul continued to
paint western and military scenes
while living in Van Buren, but he
also began to feature nature and
local life in his work, influenced by
the beauty and people of the area.

The Gilbert Gaul room at the park's
Taft Village Area contains some of
Gaul's Prints and history, and is a
nice meeting room for groups.
